New Music Spotlight ::: February Album Reviews (Part Five)

PHANTOGRAM – VOICES
Phantogram by definition is an optical illusion in which a 2-dimensional image appears to be three-dimensional. Similarly the electrorock collection is a duo that creates a sound that far outreaches just two people. Josh Carter (vocals, guitar) and Sarah Barthel grew up as friends going as far back as junior high. In 2007 the pair from Saratoga Springs, NY joined forces as Charlie Everywhere. After signing with BBE in early 2009 the group changed their name to Phantogram. Following the name change they released their self-titled EP and a second EP Running from the Cops. After a big year in 2009 Phantogram put out their first LP Eyelid Movies in the US in February of 2010. The album received generally promising reviews generating singles "Mouthful of Diamonds", "When I'm Small" and "As Far As I Can See". These singles and other tracks have been used frequently on commercials, movies, and TV shows.

Over the next few years the twosome traveled extensively both domestically and internationally, gracing hundreds of festivals and cities typically with a traveling drummer. Phantogram also found time to collaborate with Atlanta’s own Big Boi on multiple songs for his 2012Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors.

The street beat, psychpop all-stars return with the infectious and beautiful, Voices. Their second studio album brings us four tracks on their 2013 EP Phantogram and is joined by seven new tracks. Opening with ‘Nothing but Trouble’ a hips and head moving attack on your senses. It highlights Josh’s growth and grasp of the guitar and their ability to form different sounds seamlessly. ‘Black Out Days’ features what is believed to be one of producer John Hill’s many influences. Sarah’s ‘hey hey hey hey’ through the songs is a staples of two of his previous clients Rihanna and Santigold. Beyond the chorus the song focuses on synth play and Barthel’s silvery vocals.Voices mellows out with ‘Never Going Home’ headlined by vocals from Josh striking perfectly with the lyrics of an embattled home. ‘The Day You Died’ fits in most flawlessly with previous Phantogram releases with starry elongated instrumentals and precise vocals to match. After stints working with Big Boi, Stankonia Studio influences are also prevalent throughout the record. One such influenced track is ‘Howling at the Moon’ with its fast paced instrumentals and quick interchanges. ‘My Only Friend’ brings us the most intimate look at the duo. The piano-synth combo flows with her ominous vocals building as the track forms into a concrete ending to the record

The album is more explorative than previous recordings, which is quite a statement for this group. They attack this record, five years after their first and producer John Hill’s touch can be seen all over Voices. If there was an album in 2014 that deserves a first listen with headphones or a quality audio system, THIS IS IT.

New Music Spotlight ::: February Album Reviews (Part Four)

HURRAY FOR THE RIFF RAFF – SMALL TOWN HEROES

Upon first hearing the Americana rich bluesy folk outfit, Hurray for the Riff Raff, it would be hard to correctly guess the path of lead Alynda Lee Segarra. Growing up in the Bronx, Segarra developed an appreciation for the Motown and doo-wop music that flooded the streets. These influences permeate in tracks like ‘No One Else’. Alynda shares a resemblance and demeanor to fellow Puerto Rican descendant, actress Aubrey Plaza.  After leaving home, where she lived with her aunt and uncle, she traveled America by hopping freight trains, finally landing in New Orleans. Her travels and time in the Big Easy during the rebuild come pouring through the speakers on the band’s latest release, Small Town Heroes.

Their sixth US release utilizes a variety of instruments and talents of all four band members. Joining Segarra in the Riff Raff are Yosi Pearlstein (violin, percussion, fiddle), Dan Cutler (bass), Sam Doores (guitar), and Casey McAllister (keyboard). Hurray also uses folk staples accordions, organs, washboards, and even a saw to accompany Alynda’s banjo and fellow Bronx-born Norah Jones-esque raspy-whispering vocals.

Small Town Heroes opens with ‘Blue Ridge Mountain’ that encompasses all aspects of the bluegrass tunes you’ve come to know. The banjo plucking, boot tapping ditty mixes the motherly twang in her voice to recreate the sounds made in these same mountains. ‘Crash on the Highway’ does a great job of portraying a groups longing to be home while going nowhere, a feeling many Atlantans have recently come to know this winter. The Riff Raff do a great job of mixing upbeat optimistic songs with, serenading slowed down titles. The guitar driven ‘The New SF Bay Blues’ showcase the bands ability to bring the blues emotions they’ve incorporated on previous recordings. Alynda lets her voice take flight on the aforementioned ‘No One Else’ molding the piano baseline with her wide ranging vocals to create of folk-doo whop dream. The song works as on open door to the rest of the album that pours passionate vocals and an expanding repertoire of musical ability. ‘Forever is Just a Day’ brings the album to a close in a somber funeral like manner that should be associated with ending something loved.

Hurray for the Riff Raff brings back true Americana music on this entire album. With the emergence of indie folk over the past few years, not many bands have attacked the genre Americana for an entire album with the unrelenting emotion Hurray for the Riff Raff has captured.

CHEATAHS – CHEATAHS

Developed by guitarist and lead singer Nathan Hewitt as a bedroom project, he named the band Cheatahs as he was cheating on his other band, Little Death. Born and raised in a small town outside Edmonton, Canada, he later moved to London where his musical quests began. Hewitt began working on Cheatahs in 2009 with fellow ‘cheaters’ John Arthur Webb and Neil Eu. In 2012 the band lineup underwent an overhaul to its current set with Dean Deid (bass, vocals), Marc Raue (drums), and Hewitt’s friend James Wignall (guitar, vocals).

After releasing EPs in the past the foursome put out their self-titled LP on Wichita Records. The band brings different perspectives on their sound as they come from different places across the globe including Alberta, Canada, San Diego, Dresden, Germany, and Leicester, England. They began working on the album by headed first to the country, spending a week in an isolated, old stone-floored cottage in Cornwall, before coming back to complete the album at Dropout studios. ‘Kenworth’ is a tribute to his late father, a truck driver. The song, titled after the truck his father drove, is a description of what he Hewitt believes his dad’s last drive home was like.

Cheatahs is an “exploration of the possibilities of modern guitar music”. The album travels through a variety of sounds mixing rock subgenres punk, surf, with pinches of grunge, garage, and lo-fi.  The intro track builds with a collection of static, guitar, and lo-fi mix preparing you for the volume coming before a sloppy cut into ‘Geographic’.

New Music Spotlight ::: February Album Reviews (Part Three)

BLONDFIRE – YOUNG HEART

This sister-brother duo happily released their second full-length album Young Heart. It was quite the journey to this point. Erica and Bruce Driscoll were born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan; however, it was their summers that molded their musical palates, as they spent them in their mother’s native Brazil. The duo, who now calls Los Angeles home, cites Antionio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto, and Caetano Veloso as some of their early influences.

Their musical journey started as the band Nectar which also included their older sister Monica. As Nectar the three siblings toured nationally. Erica and Bruce later developed the band Astaire, which grew in popularity after having an iTunes free download of L-L-Love. Not long after, while touring, the siblings received a cease and desist order on behalf of the estate of Fred Astaire threatening legal action. The transformation to Blondfire was set in motion. Erica describes how they came upon that offbeat name;
“We were driving around with friends and someone said ‘I smell a bonfire,’” she recalls. “We thought they said ‘Blondfire,’ and at first we kind of jokingly said it should be our name – but it stuck. We liked the fact that it was masculine and feminine at the same time. It represented who we are in a cool way.”

After leaving EMI, amid structural hierarchy changes, the band self-released their debut My Someday in 2008. In November of 2011 the Driscoll’s put out a new single ‘Where the Kids Are’ which was quickly picked up by Honda to soundtrack their 2012 Civic commercials. The duo continued to work on new music, expanding on their 2013 EP Where the Kids Are to complete Young Heart.

Young Hearts showcases the dreamy electro-rock sound they’ve honed in on. The catchy sound sticks to the brain like a saccharine tune on your tongue. The title track opens the record with an inviting soft harmony laced with Erica’s floating, airy voice. The next four tracks were all on their aforementioned 2013 EP. The drum, synth single ‘Where the Kids Are’ opens the door up to their musical prowess the siblings have developed. ‘Waves’ introduced us to Erica’s young Stevie Nicks’ sound with a song that could have snuck its way onto Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk. Leaving the Brazilian influenced acoustic guitar behind ‘Walking with Giants’ takes a welcome dance-pop turn on the album. Their ethereal vocals mix perfectly with the new instrumental setup, adding depth to their performance on the record. The second half of the album is anchored by anthem driven ‘We Are One’. As this album proves and as ‘The Only Ones’ states “it’s not over” for this sibling duo.

TEMPLES – SUN STRUCTURES
Temples is part of the new wave of neo-psychedelic rock including Foxygen, Tame Impala, Diane Coffee, Of Montreal, and returning 90s staples Neutral Milk Hotel and Elf Power. These bands have rediscovered the sounds of 60s trip-rock and made it their own. Though they’re relatively new to the scene as Temples, band architects James Edward Bagshaw (guitar, vocals) and Thomas Edison Warmsley (bass) fit right in with the giant splash their genre mates turned into a tidal wave of followers that spans the globe. The band formed in Kettering, Northamptonshire in 2012 with the addition of Sam Toms (drums) and Adam Smith (keyboard, guitar), initially as a home studio project. In November of 2013 the group announced their debut album Sun Structures on Heavenly Recordings.

Coming on the heels of the American celebration of the Beatles first show in the US, the release of Sun Structures comes at a perfect time. There are similar elements at play as the Beatles ’66-’67 releases, RevolverSgt. Peppers, and Magical Mystery Tour. The album is strewn with guitar play similar to fellow English rockers The Byrds, but this long haired British foursome is a show all their own on their debut.

The album begins with the track that created serious buzz around the group when it was released in late 2012. ‘Shelter Song’ begins with classic psych guitar welcoming heavy systematic drums before joining conversational echoing vocals. There’s no doubt why this song catapulted Temples to the forefront of UK music headlines, garnering praise from the likes of Johnny Marr and Noel Gallagher. The songs that make up this album all do an incredible job of mixing together perfectly as the tracks build. The title track is tops out just above 5 minutes long, but you get entranced by it and by the time it finishes you feel like an hour has passed. ‘Keep in the Dark’ is laden with the simple guitar play and drumming that makes it reminiscent of the Grateful Dead. ‘Fragment Light’ brings the album to a close with a daydream evoking serenade.

The album somehow finds the space between hazy lyrics and crisp instrumentals to bring the acid rock jams to life. Throughout the 12 songs the lyrics span a wide assortment including conversational, narrative, poetic, and religious themes.

New Music Spotlight ::: February Album Reviews (Part Two)

BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB – SO LONG, SEE YOU TOMORROW
50 years after The Beatles debuted on American soil, becoming one of the first English groups to hit it big in the US. Now it’s no surprise that England is putting out talented bands one after another. Bombay Bicycle Club is one of those bands whose stateside presence has been growing larger in the States. Like the Fab Four, BBC (the band not the channel) is a four piece band that met when they were teenagers. The group is made up of Jack Steadman (lead vocals, guitar, piano), Jamie Macoll (guitar), Ed Nash (bass), and Suren de Saram (drums). In their first year as a band they entered into Virgin Mobile's "Road to V" competition. As part of winning the heavy competition the four friends were given the opening slot of the 2006 V Festival.

Following this performance they received a lot of press in the London area, even an admiring article in NME, one of England’s biggest music publications. In May of 2007 the band released their EP The Boy I Used to Be, followed by How We Are in October. Their first full length album, I Had the Blues but I Shook Them Loose, came in June of 2008 after all its’ members had graduated secondary school. In 2010 the band was nominated and won NME’s Best New Band award, beating out, now household names, Mumford & Sons and The xx. The boys from London continued to tour and record, releasing Flaws(2010) and A Different Kind of Fix (2011).

On November 4, 2013, the band aired Carry Me, the first single from their newest LP, So Long, See You Tomorrow. In a year of great intro songs, this album does not disappoint. The opening track ‘Overdone’ blends a mixture of sounds like a new age orchestra with Steadman’s voice guiding you through it before an abrupt ending. The second single off the album, is the upbeat ‘It’s Alright Now’, a dream pop melody that lives up to its name. ‘Carry Me’ brings a heftier set of instrumentals, including synths, to match deeper vocals. Those deeper tones are evened out by the ambient flow of ‘Home By Now’ which showcases the band’s ability to come together to make a complete sound. The album mellows out with ‘Eyes on You’ a piano driven early ninties-esque duet ballad, channeling their inner-James Blake. ‘Feel’ brings back the energy with eastern influences that make you want to get up and move.

The album is bookended with its namesake, a glo-fi space floating track. Not to go out lying down ‘So Long, See You Tomorrow’ peps up the tune mid-song leaving you wanting more. As a whole the album lobbies as their most complete and wide-ranging album to date. Is this the album that will finally grab America’s attention? BBC has already toured through and played nearly every American festival creating a sizeable fan base. As with other British bands, the best example being Arctic Monkeys, they still remain hidden secrets despite being casually known and well-traveled . It’s about time people start taking notice of this fab four.

BAND OF HORSES – ACOUSTIC AT THE RYMAN

There’s not much to say about a live album, but they are a great chance to hear bands that you haven’t been able to catch in concert. Live albums are also great because, most of the time they work as a ‘Best Of’ record and in this case give you a different feel and a glimpse at them acoustic. The 10-set recording gives you an intimate look at these five indie rockers, complete with their biggest hits including ‘No Ones Gonna Love You’, ‘The Funeral’, and ‘Detlef Schrempf’.

The Shaky Knees alums are headed by Ben Bridwell. Originally from Irmo, South Carolina, Bridwell is one of the University of Georgia’s biggest fans, even being commissioned by Grantland to preview the Bulldogs’ 2013 season. Like UGA’s season, this album shows great promise and results despite missing key components of their normal setup.

Live Music Spotlight ::: Kodaline w. LP at Terminal West

Kodaline w. LP
Monday, February 17, 2014

Terminal West ::: Atlanta, Ga

If you've never been to Terminal West before, do yourself a favor and find an upcoming show and GO. The venue is a chameleon. It is great for an acoustic show or EDM. For acts that can bring the energy and noise as well as dial it down it is perfect. This night was a perfect example of such a show.

The concert started promptly at 8pm with LP (Laura Pergolizi) gracing the stage decked out in a slimfit gray suit accompanied with a black tie and patented head of curls. The singer song-writer originally from New York City brought more than just her style. Backed by a talented drummer and guitarist who added backing vocals LP brought her ukulele and pipes equipped to belt out all the notes and whistles to put a mocking jay to shame.
Beginning the set with 'Some Day' a building song packed with emotion that showcases her range early and often. Amidst the belting lyrics LP welcome the capacity crowd and shared her love for Atlanta. During the forty minute set she hit fan favorites 'Tokyo Sunrise' and  ended with a speedy rendition of 'Into the Wild'. LP will be releasing a new album in mid-2014 and she shared a sneak peak with it's first single, 'Night Like This'. After covering Beyonce's 'Halo' at 2012 Music Midtown many were excited to see what she'd pull out of her bag this time. No one left disappointed as the group played Coldplay's 'The Scientist'.

For headlining act, Kodaline, it was a welcome to Atlanta as they played as an opener to The Airbourne Toxic Event last May at Buckhead Theatre. The four piece band from Dublin, Ireland curried favor early and often from the Atlanta crowd expressing how impressed they were with the support. Originally going by 21 Demands, the group changed their name to Kodaline in 2011. The alt-rock foursome combines childhood friends Stephan Garrigan (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, harmonica, keyboard) and Mark Pendergast (lead guitar, vocals) with Vinny May (drums, vocals) and Jason Boland (bass, vocals).
With their 2013 release In A Perfect World Kodaline has the perfect amount of material to will a headlining slot. Opening the show with 'After the Fall', a powerful song set the mood off right. Following the open the band laid into 'Pray', dripping with emotion in voice and instruments. After two songs the group 'cheers'd' the excited and vocal Terminal West crowd. The upbeat poppy single 'Brand New Day' was the crowd's first chance to really get involved and they didn't hold back.

The folky track 'Talk' lead into their band's thankfulness for the beautiful Atlanta weather they were able to enjoy. Garrigan was able to showcase his skills behind a harmonic in the intro to 'Love Like This' and they did not disappoint, leading the crowd to gain momentum.
Returning after their initial ending the band slower returned the the front of the stage having to quite massive cheers. Asking the crowd 'can you hear my clicks?' aka his snapping fingers. As a family the group beautifully serenaded the crowd with Sam Cooke's 'Bring it on Home to Me'. The band closed out with a solo performance of 'The Answer' before being rejoined by the rest of the group and LP for their hit single 'All I Want'.

Overall this show was a great showcase of vocals and bands playing in harmony. A mix of UK folk, popish love songs, and vocal driven songs Kodaline drew the crowd in early with their Irish charm and didn't let go.

Festival Spotlight ::: #BLAM Bonnaroo Lineup at Criminal Records

A quick look at this year's B.L.A.M. (Bonnaroo Lineup Announcement Megathon) and the lineup overall... This year saw many changes to BLAM in year two of the megathon. The biggest change was the night time shift to a 7pm start and the lineup drop at 9. In 2013 BLAM took place midday and cause headaches for those at work, not near a computer, or stuck in class. The 2014 addition also saw the inclusion of XBOX as a sponsor adding another dimension to view the show.

BLAM part two connected the active bonnaroovian to their local record stores. Over ten record stores across the US took part in showing the announcement, show combo live. This is where you could find YOTHT, at Atlanta's Criminal Record. As part of this each location gave away a limited amount of t-shirts and mini posters along with a chance to win two VIP tickets to this year's Bonnaroo.

The preshow included past performances from Portugal. the Man, the Lumineers, Superjams, My Morning Jacket, Kings of Leon, and many more. During these performances 'Bonnaroo Alerts' appeared on the screen revealing such Bonnaroo artists as Disclosure, The Wood Brothers, Jonathan Wilson, Sarah Jarosz, White Denim, Robert DeLong, Seasick Steve, Umphrey's McGee and James Blake.

Nine o' clock saw the start of the bigger announcements as a mashup of comedy with Hannibal Burress and Taran Killam with a superjam of The Flaming Lips and Ben Folds. Between bits and jams (including a fan submitted song, 'Pancakes') 2014 Bonnaroo artists were announced. At Criminal Records the biggest cheers came followed the unveiling of Ms. Lauryn Hill, Slightly Stoopid, Kanye West, Skrillex, and Jack White. There were many cheers and gasps throughout the drop.

Along with the excitement the viewing parties helped connect past attendees sharing past stories and potential newbies calming their fears that have kept them off the Farm in the past. This was a great addition to the overall experience. Another plus was people who haven't entered record stores before to see what it's all about and what they have to offer. Now...what about the overall lineup?

New Music Spotlight ::: February Album Reviews (Part One)

In our first of many February album reviews coming over the next few days, we start you out with two solid performers.

BROKEN BELLS – AFTER THE DISCO

It’s hard to be into the music scene and not hear the influence of Brian Burton. Better known by his stage name Danger Mouse, this University of Georgia - Grady graduate has been nominated for sixteen Grammy Awards, bringing it home 5 times. After growing up in Spring Valley, New York he moved to Athens, GA in 1998 where he DJ’d for UGA’s radio station while performing locally in a mouse outfit due to his shyness, hence the adoption of the Danger Mouse moniker. During this time, Burton took second place in a 1998 talent contest and was asked to open for a concert at the homecoming concert at Stegeman Coliseum featuring OutKast and Goodie Mob. Afterwards, Burton approached Cee Lo Green, a member of Goodie Mob, and gave him an instrumental demo tape.  The duo later formed the group Gnarls Barkley. Best known for his role as a producer he gained prominence after releasing his 2004 mix of Jay Z’s The Black Album and The Beatles’ The White Album aptly naming it The Grey Album. Since then he has become one of the most sought after producers. His work has spanned many genres having worked with The Gorillaz (Demon Days), The Black Keys (Attack & Release, El Camino), Beck (Modern Guilt), Norah Jones (Little Broken Hearts), Electric Guest (Mondo), and one of 2013’s best albums Portugal. The Man’s Evil Friends.

But Broken Bells is not about just one of music’s best, but two. James Mercer, best known as the lead singer and driving force of The Shins, makes up the other half of this dynamic duo. The Kevin Spacey look-a-like began his musical career in the early 90’s, forming the band Flake Music in 1992 and toured with Modest Mouse. As a side project in 1999, Mercer formed The Shins named after the name of the family in The Music Man, a favorite of his father. Originating as a duo, the band now plays as a well-known, five piece indie rock group. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Mercer is well versed in a variety of instruments from the guitar, bass, banjo, lap steel to the synthesizer, harmonica, glockenspiel, piano, and drums. He also owns a wide range of vocal inflection including an oft used falsetto range as part of Broken Bells.

Originally meeting in 2004 at Denmark’s Rosklide Festival the two artists happily learned they were big fans of each other’s works. Nearly four years later, the duo began secretly working on their first record Broken Bells. The announcement of the collaboration/formation of Broken Bells came a year later on September 29, 2009. Almost two years to the day of their start to the record Broken Bells was released on March 9th, 2010 and reached number one on iTunes, selling over 400,000 copies and receiving high praise from the press.

In February 2012, Mercer mentioned on a radio interview in support of The Shins’ Port of Morrow that Broken Bells had begun working on their second album. The album announcement came on October 18, 2013 and the first single, ‘Holding On for Life’, off After the Disco was released in early November. The album features the return of James Mercer’s signature Broken Bells, Barry Gibb-esque pitch matching perfectly with their newfound 70’s disco feel.

Without having seen it mentioned as such, this album works as a concept album following the course of a relationship from beginning to end from one side’s perspective. Opening with ‘Perfect World’ the song sets the groundwork for the alien, disco world the album creates. The opener brings you right back to where we left off with Broken Bells with this use of choral-like back ground vocals and range of instruments. The six and a half minute jam mellows out towards the end before returning to its melodic beginning launching into the album’s namesake, ‘After the Disco’. Track two kicks up the tone with a very Bernard Edward (Chic) like bass line. The song portrays the misadventures of nightlife after the disco is closed; it plays almost perfectly as a lead-in to or different account of the night Daft Punk depicts in the award winning song ‘Get Lucky’.

The first single ‘Holding On for Life’ brings us back to the high-pitched Bee Gees sound mixed with an alienistic deep space sound that the track’s accompanying video brings to life. ‘Leave It Alone’ has a dark-Shins style to with heavy Danger Mouse influences. The blues guitar fueled song is best described as a look back at the low point in a relationship where both sides won’t pull the plug. Following the theme ‘The Changing Lights’ is an upbeat percussion driven song reflecting that neither side of the relationship wants to be the loser of the relationship.

‘Lazy Wonderland’ brings the album back to a happier place, with a song that could be describing the thrill of an affair, or possibly a break in the madness of a spiraling relationship after a good night. ‘No Matter What You’re Told’ is a perfect blending of funk, blues, and alien disco.  The album wraps with the “narrator” taking the blame for the foregone relationship and

Overall the album has a heavy theme of finding love, the different paths taken to get there and the subsequent ride that a relationship takes you on. After the Disco employs a heavy mixture of styles and sounds with the two classic sides of James Mercer’s voice and the ever-present harmonic backup vocals. The record flows well through its entirety which is no surprise as Danger Mouse has spoken frequently on the meticulous way in which he lays out an album.

Only time will tell how their second release holds up against the original, it’s an album that deserves and practically demands multiple listens.

CYMBALS – THE AGE OF FRACTURE
The four-piece dance-rock outfit, Cymbals, has returned with their third record The Age of Fracture. Formed in 2010 the London band started, much like this website, as four friends with similar interests wanting to have fun. Fronted by Jack Clevery (vocal, guitar) the synth-heavy band is rounded out by Dan Simons (Keyboardist), Luke Carson (bassist), and drummer Neil Gillespie. They released their first LP in September of 2011. Unlearn introduced Cymbals to the world with their Talking Heads influenced rock, often sounding like an 80s inspired Bloc Party. Not wasting anytime the group released their second album Sideways, Sometimes on April 23, 2012. Recorded in a studio aboard a boat while floating the River Thames, the album got its name because their instruments had to be played sideways, sometimes. The keyboard laden 8 track recording features three ‘untitled’ instrumental tracks at the beginning, middle, and end.

The Age of Fracture opens with ‘Winter ‘98’, beginning with the noises of a crowded venue preshow the song floats with a sound eerily similar to that of Lana del Rey’s ‘Video Games’ before descending into a heavy synth groove to finish the final third of the track. ‘The Natural World’ doubles down on the 80’s dance rock for a track could fit perfectly in the climax of a John Hughes film. As the album plays you’re treated to more vocals and instruments that on the previous albums. The title track brings about a Yeasayer-like drum, keyboard mix that dissolves nicely into the next song ‘Like an Animal’. From there the album takes a turn very reminiscent of fellow English rockers, Foals.  ‘Call Me’ brings the album to a close with a subdued lyricless wrap that feels like the last day at school packing up to leave a music festival.

The latest release from these English chums appears to be more thought out and well-choreographed. Showing growth and lack of fear, this album is one of the best dance rock albums in recent memory.  For those new to the Cymbals they take all the elements of the bands mentioned previously and fuse them together with their own touch to make another great album.
