New Music Spotlight :: Singles - Future Islands

When I first heard the debut release “Seasons (Waiting On You)”, I certainly felt that Future Islands deserved a solid round of applause. However, after reading up on these guys and subsequently devouring their latest album, “Singles”, Future Islands undoubtedly deserves this.

After 11 years under the radar, Future Islands almost gave up before recording their most recent album. 11 years ago, I was 17 and planning on marrying my high school sweetheart; it didn’t work out. I can’t say the same for Future Islands! Without question, these guys are salty vets; playing small venues, sweating like three little piggies, and waiting for their break all the while writing incredible music. After 11 years of putting in work and finally making it, I would dance and scream like an infamous maniac too.
Front man Samuel T. Herring’s energy spreads like a wild fire. He gives every ounce of oomph in each performance (live or recorded). I’ve scoured the Internet to see if he has had a background in Performance Arts, but have struck out. Regardless, his talent is intangible. I remember hearing “Seasons (Waiting On You)” and thinking: How great is it that there is a band out there with TWO lead singers!!!
Wrong. Way wrong. Herring’s voice is so diverse and his range takes you on a rollercoaster ride; flying through painfully romantic tracks such as “Sun In the Morning” and being whirled around to fond memories with “A Song for Our Grandfathers”.  You can hear their experience with their offbeat instrumental choices. But you can feel their life through their spellbinding lyrics. Future Islands have grown to be comfortable in their own skin. Admitting to flaws, showing vulnerability, they are honest and humble. Perhaps they had the mentality of writing, what they assumed would be, their final album like their last words; certain about so many things, but questioning much more.
It’s been a fun ride guys, but please keep taking us on it.

  1. Totally agree with your post. Keep on keeping on, Future Islands. I'm a new fan (NPR and Letterman)....but I'm hooked. Bravo, fellows.
