New Music Spotlight::: Darlings - Kevin Drew

“The most innovative thing you can do these days is be honest.” –Kevin Drew

Kevin Drew’s sophomore solo album, “Darlings”, is bursting with honesty and oozing with sensuality. Alongside its constant inertia, the energy is inescapable. Not that you would want to escape “Darlings”. Just like meeting someone that you’re attracted to, you will be hooked within the first 5 seconds. Then the seduction begins.

Kevin Drew effortlessly keeps the spark alive while you have a relationship with his album. If his first release is any indicator of his intentions (“Good Sex”) you understand where he is going to take you and you become increasingly aware of yourself; your past, your wants, your needs.

But don’t lie to yourself. If ever there was a turnoff for Kevin Drew, it would be falsifying reality. His distaste for fabrication is very apparent with the track “Bullshit Ballad”; a song that calls out current radio stars and their… well… bullshit. Kevin Drew craves real intimacy of all caveats. “Darlings” explores understanding in a glittering wonderment that only a true lover could do. Do not be intimidated by “Darlings”. Kevin Drew keeps his wits about him while still having a chuckle.
Inspired by the track, “Body Butter”, Kevin Drew released his own line of Body Butter. But you can’t stop there. What good is body butter without a commercial?
The physical manifestation of this album is reflected in Kevin Drew’s music videos. In “Good Sex”, Drew auditioned real couples and asked them to strip themselves of insecurity and be intimate with each other. According to Drew, the track is about the rise and fall of love. The video, on the other hand, is about much more. Take a look.
Once you've finished this album, you’ll understand why the lyrics “I’m still breathing with you baby” is echoing in your mind for days. Because someone is breathing with you, even if it is Kevin Drew himself.
