Festival Spotlight ::: 2016 Shaky Knees Music Festival

We’ve been blessed with another amazing Shaky Knees lineup. The fourth installment of the 3-day Atlanta rock festival will take place at Centennial Olympic Park on May 13-15 2016. If you’re worried about Knees’ fourth change in venue in four years, don’t be. Centennial has successfully hosted many events over the past few years including; Outkast ATLast, Mumford & Son’s Gentlemen of the Road, Foo Fighters, and Sweetwater 420 Festival. With each year and each change in venue there have been pluses and minuses.

In 2014 Shaky Knees quickly outgrew its original 2013 home, Masquerade Music Park and took a major step forward in the eyes of the festival scene. Adding third day and nearly 20 additional artists, the festival relocated to Midtown’s Atlantic Station. This location worked out surprisingly well for the event itself, but parking and traffic drew constant complaints from the festival goers, despite being only blocks from a MARTA station. As per Shaky Knees tradition, it rained the first two days and though the Atlantic Station grounds drained well, the asphalt lot that housed the fest became brutally hot reflecting the high sun and sending many people under tents and searching for any shade possible. The third chapter in the Shaky Knees story took place at Central Park. Even though few ATLien’s had heard of the Central Park venue prior to the festival, it worked out incredibly well and drawing rave reviews from the patrons. There was adequate shade, close to public transportation, and the parking options were well laid out. Add a great view of the city and you have yourself an amazing scene. When the festival announced the move to Centennial Park in late fall, many people were skeptical and even angry, but when this year’s 73 bands get set to take the stage, Central Park will be beside, if not part of a giant construction site, not ideal conditions to have inebriated music lovers around. The festival went with the next best option for attendees and for their own financial sake. It will be interesting to see where the festival lands in 2017. Could it grow into Piedmont Park? The lineup is already better than Piedmont’s annual music festival, Music Midtown. Will construction be finished to allow a return to Central Park or could an entirely new venue be introduced? Who knows for now, but in Tim Sweetwood and his team, we trust. One thing is for sure, we anticipate the same amazing festival atmosphere we’ve grown accustom to from this group, complete with great shows, plenty of available water, quick and clean restrooms, and amazing food and beverages!

Over the coming weeks, we will begin taking a deeper look into the festival lineup introducing you to the artists you might not know YET, maybe uncovering a few new facts about your favorites, as well as interviews we’ve lineup up with Shaky Knees artists.
